CHARLEROI, Pa. — Charleroi School District leaders said two members of an unnamed sports team have contracted methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, otherwise known as MRSA.
Channel 11′s Vince Sims spoke to the superintendent who said the school has cleaned the locker rooms and sent equipment used by the fall sports teams to a professional cleaning company.
According to a letter sent home with parents on Tuesday, two players on the same team contracted the infection.
The school district’s superintendent said this is the third time that MRSA has occurred in the district in the past six years.
Health officials said MRSA can be spread by direct physical contact or sharing objects like towels, workout areas and sports equipment.
“We chemically cleaned and chemically bombed the locker room area and made sure that was all cleaned out. We sent the pads out from the football players to model cleaners to make sure they were professionally cleaned and disinfected,” said Superintendent Brad Ferko.
In additional to having the athletic equipment cleaned and sterilized, the superintendent said all of the desks and rooms at the school have been cleaned as well.
